Best Engineering Recruiters, Staffing Agencies and Executive Search Firms

Best Engineering Recruiters, Staffing Agencies and Executive Search Firms

For a chief engineer or engineering C-suite search, Stanton Chase has the most specific engineering leadership practice on this list. For contract engineers at volume, Actalent is the largest engineering-dedicated staffing company here, and for controls and automation roles, Direct Recruiters is the specialist. The other seven firms fill narrower gaps, from construction-side civil engineering to semiconductor and medical device hiring.

This list covers hardware, industrial and infrastructure engineering: mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, controls and aerospace roles, plus engineering leadership.

For software roles, see our list of software engineer staffing agencies.

Disclosure: Alpha Apex Group (AAG), the publisher of this article, is included on this list. We evaluated AAG against the same criteria as every other firm, and we encourage you to weigh its placement the way you would any other entry.

Engineering Staffing Agency, Recruiter or Executive Search Firm: Which One Do You Need?

The right type of firm depends on the role's seniority and whether you need the person for a project or permanently. Engineering staffing agencies supply contract engineers, contingency recruiters fill permanent roles and get paid when you hire, and retained executive search firms run exclusive searches for senior leaders.

Firm type Roles it fits How it is paid
Engineering staffing agency Contract and contract-to-hire engineers, designers and technicians; project surges and plant shutdowns An hourly markup on the contractor’s pay rate, plus a conversion fee if you hire the contractor permanently
Contingency engineering recruiter Direct-hire engineers, engineering managers and some directors, where several qualified candidates exist A percentage of first-year salary, paid only when you hire their candidate
Retained executive search firm VP of engineering, chief engineer, plant leadership and C-suite roles, including confidential replacement searches A retainer paid in installments during the search (see the fees section)

Many firms now sell more than one model. The Judge Group and Direct Recruiters, for example, both offer contract staffing alongside direct hire and search, so ask which model a firm recommends for your specific role and why.

How We Ranked These Engineering Recruiting Firms

We started with 15 firms and kept those with a dedicated engineering practice and a verifiable headquarters with real staff. We excluded firms that listed engineering as one service among many unrelated ones, or that showed no evidence of a staffed office. We scored the remaining firms on five weighted criteria:

Criterion Weight What we looked for
Engineering-specific proof 35% Named engineering practices, practice leaders, published engineering placements or volumes
Seniority range 20% Ability to fill roles from individual-contributor engineers to engineering executives
Engagement models 20% Contract, contingency, retained and project-based options
Verified presence 15% A confirmed headquarters, local staff and industry memberships
Published terms 10% Public information on fee models, process or guarantees

Firms are listed in score order. The numbering reflects how many hiring situations each firm covers and is not a quality ranking.

The 10 Best Engineering Recruiters and Executive Search Firms

1. Stanton Chase

Stanton Chase website

Stanton Chase is a retained executive search firm with a dedicated Engineering, Construction and Building Materials sector inside its Industrial practice, which also covers aerospace and defense, chemicals, automotive, industrial equipment and infrastructure.

Stuart Glassman, a managing director in the Baltimore office, leads that sector globally, so engineering-led manufacturers work with a named sector leader from the first call.

The firm is a member of the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants (AESC) and pairs search with executive assessment, succession planning and onboarding support.

  • Best for: Manufacturers and EPC firms hiring a CEO, COO, chief engineer or SVP of engineering who need a global candidate pool.
  • Not a fit for: Individual-contributor engineers or contract project staffing.

2. Actalent

Actalent website

Actalent is the engineering and sciences company Allegis Group formed in 2021 by combining Aerotek's engineering and sciences division with EASi.

At launch, it reported more than 4,500 clients and 27,500 engineering and sciences consultants. Coverage spans product and manufacturing engineering, civil and environmental engineering, power and utilities, construction management and systems engineering.

Everest Group named Actalent a Leader in its US engineering contingent staffing assessment in 2022 and again in 2023, ranking it first for market impact both years. It also runs outsourced engineering services, so a program can grow from a few contract engineers into a managed project team with the same vendor.

  • Best for: Aerospace, utility, and manufacturing programs that need many contract engineers at once.
  • Not a fit for: A confidential search for a VP of engineering or chief engineer.

3. JMJ Phillip

JMJ Phillip website

JMJ Phillip is a Troy, Michigan executive search firm built around manufacturing, supply chain and technology, with an engineering practice that recruits engineers and engineering executives for manufacturers, complex construction companies, and industrial solutions providers.

Its published process names steps most firms leave vague: an in-house research team, forced ranking of candidates, counteroffer planning, compensation strategy, and resignation assistance. The last two matter when a strong engineer's current employer fights to keep them.

JMJ Phillip belongs to a group of search brands that includes Clarke Caniff and Intrinsic Workforce Recruiters, which widens the research behind each search.

  • Best for: Mid-sized manufacturers competing with large OEMs for experienced engineering managers and directors.
  • Not a fit for: Contract engineers billed by the hour.

4. Direct Recruiters

Direct Recruiters website

Direct Recruiters, founded in 1983 in Solon, Ohio, runs separate automation, robotics, and sensors and controls practices, each with a named practice leader. Its engineering desks place mechanical and electrical design engineers, automation and controls engineers, applications engineers, and engineering managers.

The firm has been a member of A3, the Association for Advancing Automation, since 2016, which keeps its recruiters close to the automation trade community. Clients can choose contingency search, contract staffing, or direct retention, a pay-for-performance form of retained search built around keeping the hire in the role.

  • Best for: Automation integrators, robotics companies, and equipment makers hiring controls or applications engineers.
  • Not a fit for: Civil, structural, or infrastructure engineering roles.

5. Kelly Engineering

Kelly Engineering is the engineering practice of Kelly Science, Engineering, Technology & Telecom (SETT), the specialty division of Kelly Services in Troy, Michigan. It is organized by industry: mobility (automotive and aerospace), semiconductor and electronics, medical device, chemical and energy, and advanced manufacturing and automation.

Kelly says every recruiter on the team has hands-on engineering experience, and that the practice recruited more than 2,500 new engineering professionals last year.

Everest Group named Kelly Engineering a Leader in its US engineering contingent staffing assessment for a fifth straight year in 2026. Staffing Industry Analysts ranked it the fourth-largest US engineering staffing firm in 2025.

  • Best for: Semiconductor, medical device, and automotive companies hiring engineers for regulated product work.
  • Not a fit for: Board-level or C-suite searches.

6. Alpha Apex Group

Alpha Apex Group website

Alpha Apex Group is a Denver-based executive search and consulting firm with engineering recruitment practices for civil, aerospace, electrical, and environmental engineering.

Searches start with talent mapping against the client's technical and business goals. The firm can place full-time leaders or fractional executives when a plant or program needs interim engineering leadership.

Because AAG also consults on organizational design, it can help define an engineering leadership role and its reporting lines before the search opens. Across all functions, AAG reports a 43-day average time-to-fill for full-time hires and first candidates within 72 hours.

  • Best for: Mid-market industrial and engineering companies hiring directors, VPs or fractional engineering leaders.
  • Not a fit for: High-volume contract engineering staffing.

7. Sterling Engineering

Sterling Engineering, founded in 1969 in Westchester, Illinois, combines technical staffing with an engineering services arm led by licensed professional engineers.

Its staffing business is 100% employee-owned and has won ClearlyRated's Best of Staffing awards for client, talent, and employee satisfaction; Sterling notes that fewer than 2% of North American staffing firms earn the client and talent awards.

Recruiters are organized by discipline and industry, including automation, food and beverage, life sciences, manufacturing, utilities and renewable energy. The engineering services arm is a certified woman-owned business, which matters to buyers with supplier diversity targets.

  • Best for: Food, life sciences and utility companies that want contract engineers and a PE-led project team from one supplier.
  • Not a fit for: Engineering executive search.

8. Boyden

Boyden was founded in New York in 1946 and is one of the longest-running retained executive search firms, with more than 300 partners across 75-plus offices in over 45 countries. Its industrial practice runs engineering leadership searches and covers manufacturing and industrial technology.

Forbes named Boyden to its list of America's Best Executive Recruiting Firms for 2025, and the firm is an AESC member.

Its partner-owned office structure gives each market local relationships, which helps when a search for a plant leader or chief engineer has to cover several countries at once.

  • Best for: Multinational industrial companies filling engineering leadership roles in more than one region.
  • Not a fit for: Mid-level engineering hires where a retained fee is hard to justify.

9. The Judge Group

The Judge Group was founded in 1970 to place engineering and management professionals and is now based in Wayne, Pennsylvania, with more than 30 locations in the US, Canada, and India.

Its engineering staffing team runs dedicated desks for electrical and controls, chemical, quality, continuous improvement, project and process, and civil and construction engineering.

Judge reports a database of more than eight million candidates and says it works with over 60 of the Fortune 100. One vendor can cover contract, contract-to-hire, direct hire, and executive search, which suits companies consolidating their engineering suppliers.

  • Best for: Large manufacturers that want one supplier across engineering, IT, and quality roles.
  • Not a fit for: A partner-led, confidential leadership search.

10. Kimmel & Associates

Kimmel & Associates

Kimmel & Associates has recruited executives exclusively for construction and related industries from Asheville, North Carolina since 1981, so its engineering searches sit on the construction side: heavy civil, mechanical and electrical subcontracting, renewable energy and power, and architecture and engineering firms.

Each consultant covers one sector in one region, so a heavy civil search in the Northeast goes to a recruiter who works only in that market. Searches range from field roles such as superintendents up to the executive suite.

Kimmel describes itself as the largest industry-specific executive search firm in North America.

  • Best for: Contractors and infrastructure firms hiring civil, MEP, or project engineers who will run job sites, and executives with industry experience.
  • Not a fit for: Product, process, or R&D engineering at manufacturers.

Which Engineering Recruiters Specialize in Your Discipline?

The best recruiter for a mechanical engineer sometimes differs from the best one for a civil or controls engineer.

Below, each discipline lists the firms from this guide that cover it most directly and the credential worth confirming before an interview.

Mechanical Engineering Recruiters

Kelly Engineering, The Judge Group and Sterling Engineering all run mechanical engineering desks for product design, manufacturing and plant roles.

For design engineers, ask how the recruiter tests CAD proficiency and GD&T knowledge under ASME Y14.5, since a résumé claim on either is easy to make and hard to check without a technical screen.

Electrical Engineering Recruiters

Direct Recruiters places electrical design engineers for automation and equipment makers, and Judge runs a combined electrical and controls desk.

AAG's electrical engineering recruitment practice focuses on energy specialists and engineering project leaders, including those focusing on renewable energy. Power and utility roles that sign drawings need a PE license in the state where the work is done.

Civil and Structural Engineering Recruiters

Kimmel & Associates covers civil engineering on the contractor side, while Actalent staffs civil and environmental engineers for project work.

Civil engineers who offer services to the public generally must hold a PE license, while entry-level civil engineers typically do not, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics guidance.

Chemical and Process Engineering Recruiters

Judge staffs chemical engineers, including fire and explosion and thermofluids specialists, and Kelly Engineering runs a chemical and energy practice.

Sterling Engineering's work in life sciences and food production suits process roles in regulated plants.

For roles in plants that handle highly hazardous chemicals, confirm the candidate's experience with process safety management programs.

Controls and Automation Engineering Recruiters

Direct Recruiters, profiled above, is the most specialized firm here for automation and controls hiring. Sterling Engineering also lists automation among its core industries.

Ask which PLC and DCS platforms the recruiter's recent placements used, because a Rockwell specialist and a Siemens specialist are not interchangeable on a live line.

Aerospace and Defense Engineering Recruiters

Actalent serves aerospace and defense programs at scale, and Kelly Engineering's mobility practice covers aerospace alongside automotive.

AAG also runs a dedicated aerospace executive search for leadership roles. Defense roles often add security clearance and export-control requirements, covered in the credentials section below.

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Recruiters

JMJ Phillip's roots are in manufacturing engineering leadership, and Sterling Engineering staffs manufacturing and industrial engineers at the individual-contributor level.

For plant and operations engineering leaders, AAG's manufacturing executive search team covers director and VP roles. Lean and Six Sigma credentials are common screening criteria for continuous improvement roles.

How Much Do Engineering Recruiters Charge?

Engineering recruiters charge in one of three ways: a percentage of first-year salary for a direct hire, a retained fee for executive search, or an hourly markup for contract engineers. None of the firms on this list publishes a rate card, so the ranges below are market references.

Model Typical fee When you pay
Contingency direct hire 20% of first-year salary is the most common fee, charged by 42% of staffing firms in a Staffing Industry Analysts survey from 2021 (summarized by Second Talent) When the candidate is hired
Retained executive search About one-third of the placed candidate's estimated first-year cash compensation, per Korn Ferry's fiscal 2025 annual report In installments during the search
Contract staffing A markup of roughly 25% to 75% over the contractor's pay rate, per WorkGenius Each hour the contractor works

Before signing, get three terms in writing:

  • The base the percentage applies to (base salary or total cash compensation)
  • The event that triggers payment (offer acceptance or start date)
  • The replacement guarantee if the hire leaves early

For contract staffing, ask for the pay rate and markup separately, and ask what conversion fee applies if you hire the contractor.

What Credentials Should You Verify Before a Recruiter Submits Engineering Candidates?

Agree on the credentials a role requires before the search starts, and ask the recruiter to confirm them before submitting candidates. Three categories catch most problems.

PE Licensure and FE/EIT Status

A Professional Engineer license is issued by a state or territorial licensing board, and the issuing board's online lookup is the place to verify it. NCEES writes the FE and PE exams but does not issue licenses. If the engineer will practice in a different state, confirm they can get licensed there, since licensure is granted state by state.

Security Clearance, ITAR and U.S.-Person Requirements

Defense and aerospace roles may require an active clearance or access to ITAR-controlled technical data.

Department of Justice guidance from 2023 says the ITAR and EAR contain no hiring requirements, and using them to exclude workers based on citizenship or immigration status is illegal. Employers need export licenses only for non-U.S. persons who will access controlled data, as Reed Smith summarizes.

Discipline Certifications and Software Proficiency

Ask for proof of the specific tools and certifications the job uses:

  • CAD platforms and GD&T for design engineers
  • PLC and DCS platforms for controls engineers
  • Lean or Six Sigma belts for continuous improvement roles

A short technical screen run by the recruiter or your own engineer is more reliable than a listed skill.

What Questions Should You Ask an Engineering Recruiter, and What Are the Red Flags?

Ask about recent placements in your discipline, who runs the search, how technical depth is tested, and what the replacement guarantee covers. Vague answers to any of these are the main red flags.

Question A strong answer A red flag
Which roles like ours have you filled in the last 12 months? Specific titles, disciplines and industries, with timelines "We recruit all types of engineers"
Who will run our search day to day? A named recruiter with engineering placements in your discipline The partner who pitched you, with the work handed to a junior team
How do you assess technical depth? A structured technical screen or engineer-led interview Résumé keyword matching only
Which companies are off-limits to you? A clear list of current clients they will not recruit from No off-limits policy
Who owns a candidate you have already seen elsewhere? A written candidate-ownership window Vague or no answer
What is your replacement guarantee? A defined period, conditions, and remedy in the contract A verbal promise
How will you report progress? Weekly updates with market feedback and pipeline numbers Updates only when a candidate is ready
How do you confirm licenses and clearances? Board lookups and documented checks before submission "The candidate told us"

Pick the firm type first, then shortlist two or three firms from the comparison table, put each through the eight vetting questions, and confirm the credentials the role needs before the first interview.

AAG can scope the search with you in one call, including the license and clearance checks the role needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Engineering Recruiters Charge Candidates a Fee?

No. Engineering recruiters and executive search firms are paid by the hiring company, either as a placement fee, a retained fee, or a markup on contract pay. A recruiter who asks an engineer to pay for a placement is not following standard industry practice.

What's the Difference Between an Engineering Headhunter and an Engineering Staffing Agency?

An engineering headhunter recruits for permanent roles and approaches engineers who are not actively looking, usually on a contingency or retained basis. An engineering staffing agency employs contract engineers on its own payroll and places them with clients for a project or a set period.

Who Are the Big 5 Executive Search Firms, and Do They Recruit Engineers?

The firms usually called the Big 5 are Korn Ferry, Heidrick & Struggles, Spencer Stuart, Russell Reynolds Associates, and Egon Zehnder. All five work mainly at the C-suite and board level, which includes engineering leadership at large companies. They rarely handle individual-contributor engineering roles.

Can a Recruiter Verify a PE License or Security Clearance?

A recruiter can run the state-board PE check before submitting a candidate. Clearance status is confirmed through the employer's facility security officer and government systems, so the recruiter's role is to confirm the candidate's stated clearance level and eligibility. Agree on who verifies what before the search starts.

Is Contract-to-Hire a Good Option for Engineering Roles?

Contract-to-hire works well when you want to see an engineer on a live project before committing, or when headcount approval is pending. Expect to pay the hourly bill rate during the contract and a conversion fee if you hire the engineer permanently. It works less well for senior engineers who already have stable permanent jobs.
