CFO Salary by Company Revenue (2026 Data): Base, Bonus, and Equity at Every Size
.jpg)
Ask five sources what a CFO earns, and you'll get five answers. The BLS puts financial managers at a $166,570 median, while S&P 500 CFOs earned a median of about $6 million in 2025, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis (source yahoo!finance).
Both numbers are accurate. They describe different jobs at companies of very different sizes, which is why a single "average CFO salary" is close to useless when you're pricing a real role.
This guide breaks CFO salary down by company revenue, using three CFO pay surveys fielded between late 2024 and late 2025, plus 2026 proxy filings, so you can see base, bonus, and equity at each size.
If you're hiring a finance leader now, our CFO executive search team benchmarks every package against live market data before the first candidate call.
TL;DR
- Median CFO base salary at PE-backed companies rises from about $300,000 under $50M in revenue to $550,000 above $1B.
- Total cash grows faster than base, because target bonuses climb from 35% to 80% of salary as revenue grows.
- Public-company CFOs earn most of their pay in stock, so total compensation runs into the millions even when base sits under $900,000.
- Ownership moves CFO pay as much as revenue does: PE-backed, VC-backed, and public CFOs at the same size get very different packages.
- Fractional CFOs average about $177 an hour, which works out to roughly $129,000 a year at 14 hours a week.
Revenue sets the floor of a CFO package. Ownership structure and incentive design set the ceiling. That's why base salary is the least informative number in a CFO offer: across a 500-fold range in company size, base moves less than 2x, while bonus targets, equity grants, and severance terms move far more.
We approach every CFO search with that in mind. The real negotiation, and the real retention risk, sits in the variable pay. A company that matches the market on base and underpays on equity hasn't matched the market at all.
How Much Does a CFO Make in 2026?
Finance leaders surveyed at mostly private, investor-backed companies earn a median base salary of $300,000 to $370,000 and median total cash of roughly $375,000 to $500,000.
CFOs at S&P 500 companies earn a median of about $6 million in total compensation, most of it in stock.
The gap between those figures comes from three things sources measure differently:
- Population. Government data counts every financial manager. CFO surveys count only people in the top finance seat.
- Pay element. Some sources report base salary only, others report total cash (base plus bonus), and proxy-based figures report total compensation including stock.
- Ownership. Private, PE-backed, VC-backed, and public companies structure pay in different ways, even at the same revenue.
Here's how the most-cited benchmarks line up:
| Source | Who's in the sample | Median base | Median total pay | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BLS, May 2025 | All financial managers, not only CFOs | $166,570 (wage) | Not reported | Lower bound only |
| National staffing firm, 2027 salary guide | CFOs placed by one firm, mostly small and mid-size employers | $273,250 midpoint ($215,000 to $326,250) | Not reported | Smaller private companies |
| The F Suite, 2026 | 346 CFOs and heads of finance at private and public companies, venture-heavy | $300,000 | $376,875 cash; $447,600 with equity | Tech and venture-backed companies |
| PE-backed CFO survey, Dec 2025 | 213 US CFOs at PE-backed companies | $370,000 | $500,000 cash | Private and PE-backed companies by revenue |
| S&P 500 (WSJ analysis) | CFOs of the 500 largest public companies | Not reported | About $6 million total compensation | Large-cap public companies |
Before quoting any CFO salary, pick the row that matches the company you're pricing.
CFO Salary by Company Revenue: 2026 Benchmark Table
At PE-backed and investor-backed private companies, CFO base salary rises steadily with revenue, from a median of $300,000 under $50M to $550,000 above $1B, and total cash rises faster, from $355,000 to $860,000.
Three independent CFO pay surveys, fielded between Q4 2024 and December 2025, agree on that slope, even though they sample different companies.
| Revenue tier | Median base (survey A) | Median base (survey B) | Most common base (survey C) | Median total cash (survey A) | Total cash, 25th to 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $50M | $300,000 | $277,000 (under $100M) | $250,000 to $299,000 | $355,000 | $283,000 to $443,000 |
| $50M to $100M | $330,000 | $277,000 (under $100M) | $250,000 to $299,000 | $380,000 | $330,000 to $490,000 |
| $100M to $250M | $350,000 | $347,000 | $350,000 to $399,000 | $450,000 | $390,000 to $600,000 |
| $250M to $500M | $370,000 | $387,000 | $350,000 to $399,000 | $500,000 | $420,000 to $600,000 |
| $500M to $1B | $440,000 | $435,000 | $400,000 to $449,000 (all $500M+) | $700,000 | $500,000 to $800,000 |
| Over $1B | $550,000 | $475,000 | $400,000 to $449,000 (all $500M+) | $860,000 | $650,000 to $1,100,000 |
- Survey A: A December 2025 survey of 213 US CFOs at PE-backed companies.
- Survey B: A second survey of PE-backed CFOs fielded in August and September 2025.
- Survey C: A survey of 312 sitting CFOs reported by the Journal of Accountancy, fielded in Q4 2024 and published in 2025; 83% of respondents were at private or investor-backed companies.
All three are self-reported and weighted toward private and investor-backed companies, so every tier figure below describes that market unless noted. Public-company pay gets its own section.
CFO Salary for Small Companies Under $50M Revenue
A CFO at a company under $50M in revenue earns a median base salary of $300,000 and median total cash of $355,000.
At this size, many finance leaders carry a VP of Finance or controller title even when they do the CFO's job. Check scope before you benchmark: a person running FP&A, banking relationships, and board reporting should be priced against this tier, whatever the title says. If the company only needs that work part of the week, the fractional section below covers that option.
CFO Salary at $50M-$100M Revenue
The median CFO at a $50M to $100M company is paid a $330,000 base, and bonus lifts median total cash to $380,000.
This is the tier where many companies make their first full-time CFO hire. Base is only $30,000 higher than in the tier below, so the package usually wins or loses on bonus design and equity. Build the bonus around two or three metrics the CFO controls, such as cash conversion and forecast accuracy, so the variable pay reads as earnable.
CFO Salary at a $100 Million to $250 Million Company
A CFO at a $100M to $250M company earns a median base salary of $350,000 and median total cash of $450,000.
The step from $380,000 to $450,000 in total cash is the largest proportional jump below $500M. A 2026 survey of technology finance leaders found the same thing: CFOs at $100M to $250M companies earn about 55% more than CFOs at companies under $10M. If you're growing into this tier, budget for the jump before you open the search.
CFO Salary at $250M-$500M Revenue
Median CFO base salary reaches $370,000 at $250M to $500M in revenue, with total cash at a $500,000 median.
This tier saw the steepest drop in average base year over year, down 11% from 2024 to 2025 in survey A, while the under-$50M and $500M-$1B tiers slipped 2% and 1%. Treat it as a soft spot in the market: companies here are getting experienced CFOs at bases that look more like the tier below. Set the offer at the median and spend the savings on bonus or equity, where candidates are paying closer attention.
How Much Does a CFO at a $500 Million Company Make?
A CFO at a $500 million company typically earns a $440,000 median base and $700,000 in total cash, based on the $500M to $1B tier. In survey C, 22% of CFOs at companies above $500M earn a base of $450,000 or more.
Total cash jumps by $200,000 over the prior tier while base rises only $70,000. That gap is all bonus. The pay-mix section below shows how that bonus share keeps climbing above $1B.
What Is the Average CFO Salary at a $1 Billion Company?
CFOs at private and PE-backed companies above $1B in revenue earn a median base of $550,000 and median total cash of $860,000, with the 75th percentile reaching $1.1 million.
The job also changes shape at this size: lender relationships, investor relations, and exit preparation take a much larger share of the CFO's time. The seat is also a route to the top job: about 19% of current Fortune 500 CEOs have prior CFO experience, which makes CFO pay part of CEO succession planning for many boards.
For public companies above $1B, the economics shift almost entirely to stock, which the public vs private section covers in detail.
How CFO Pay Mix Changes as Company Revenue Grows
From the smallest tier to the largest, median CFO base salary grows 1.83x while median total cash grows 2.42x. The difference comes from bonus: the median target bonus climbs from 35% of base under $50M to 80% of base above $1B.
| Revenue tier | Base as % of total cash | Median target bonus (% of base) | Median equity grant (% of company) | Median equity value at award |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $50M | 85% | 35% | 1.0% | $590,000 |
| $50M to $100M | 87% | 38% | 1.0% | $850,000 |
| $100M to $250M | 78% | 50% | 1.0% | $2,000,000 |
| $250M to $500M | 74% | 50% | 0.6% | $2,000,000 |
| $500M to $1B | 63% | 60% | 0.8% | $3,000,000 |
| Over $1B | 64% | 80% | 0.7% | $4,000,000 |
Source: survey A. Base as % of total cash is our calculation (median base divided by median total cash).

The equity column holds the most useful pattern. The share of the company a CFO receives drifts down from 1.0% to around 0.7%, yet the dollar value at award rises almost sevenfold, from $590,000 to $4.0 million.
Survey C shows the same shape: the most common grant is 1.00 to 1.24 points below $500M and under 0.49 points above it.
Use the pattern to decide where to push in a negotiation:
- Under $250M: negotiate the equity percentage. A tenth of a point at this size can be worth more over a hold period than a raise in base.
- $250M to $1B: negotiate the bonus target and what triggers payout. Bonus is a quarter to a third of total cash here.
- Above $1B: negotiate the payout curve and equity value at award, since the percentage is small but the dollars are large.
If you're designing the plan from the company side, a total rewards consultant can model the bonus curve and dilution before the offer goes out.
Public vs Private CFO Salary at the Same Revenue
Public-company CFO base salaries sit close to private ones. Across companies from $0.8B to $416B in revenue, the CFO bases in our proxy sample run from $466,000 to $899,000.
The real gap is annual stock awards, which push public CFO total compensation past $2 million even at companies under $1B in revenue.
Here's what 2026 proxy statements show for fiscal 2025 (Nvidia's fiscal 2026 ends in January 2026):
| Company | Fiscal-year revenue | CFO | Base salary | Stock awards | Total compensation | CFO pay as % of CEO pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Axcelis Technologies | $839M | James Coogan | $466,346 | $1,541,055 | $2,355,480 | 46% |
| Pool Corporation | $5.3B | Melanie Hart | $540,000 | $1,224,740 | $2,159,558 | 33% |
| Nvidia | $215.9B | Colette Kress | $898,577 | $12,825,872 | $14,340,850 | 39% |
| Apple | About $416B | Kevan Parekh | $891,519 | $18,433,135 | $22,467,309 | n/a |
Total compensation grows about tenfold, almost entirely through stock. Apple's figure covers Parekh's first year as CFO, so treat it as a transition-year number. If you are comparing specialist partners, our roundup of finance executive recruiters breaks down the leading options.

Broader proxy data points the same way. A Datarails analysis of 1,991 US public companies found fiscal 2024 median CFO total compensation of $6 million at the top 500 by market cap and $2.70 million at the rest.
At $500M to $1B in revenue, the two models diverge in timing more than size:
| Pay element | PE-backed CFO ($500M to $1B) | Public CFO (Axcelis, $839M) |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | Median $440,000 | $466,346 |
| Equity | One-time grant, median $3.0M at award, paid at exit | $1.54M in stock awards, granted again each year |
| When equity pays | At the sale of the company | Vests on a schedule, tradeable |
| Main risk | Exit delayed or below plan | Share price falls |
A PE-backed CFO who expects an exit in three years is earning roughly $1 million a year in equity at award value, or about $1.7 million a year with median cash, against $2.36 million at Axcelis. Stretch the hold to six years, and the PE figure drops to about $1.2 million.
The PE package only pulls ahead if the exit beats plan, which is exactly the bet sponsor equity asks a CFO to make. For a deeper look at how sponsors run these hires, see our guide to executive search for PE-backed companies.
One caution with public data: outliers distort averages badly. Welltower's CFO received a pay package of about $167 million in 2025 (according to yahoo!finance source mentioned earlier), nearly all of it a one-time 10-year stock grant. Use medians and named comparables, never a headline figure.
Who Gets Paid More, a CEO or CFO?
CEOs get paid more, usually about three times as much as their CFO. The Conference Board found that S&P 500 CFOs earned 35% of CEO pay in 2024, a ratio that held near a third from 2020 on.
The proxy table above lands in the same range, from 33% at Pool Corporation to 46% at Axcelis, which makes the ratio a quick way to sanity-check any public company CFO offer.
How Much Does a Startup CFO Earn at Each Funding Stage?
Technology and venture-backed CFOs report a median base salary of $285,000, with the middle half between $220,000 and $335,000, according to a survey of 144 tech CFOs fielded in March and April 2026.
Bonus targets rise with stage: The F Suite's data shows median targets of 18% of base at seed and 50% at Series E and beyond.
What stands out in venture-backed packages:
- Equity is the main event. 77% of tech CFOs receive equity, with a median grant of 1% of the pool and a median annual value of $1.0 million. Grants typically vest over four years with a one-year cliff.
- Bonuses pay out below target. Median CFO bonus attainment was 87% of target, so a $100,000 target bonus typically pays about $87,000.
- Severance is often missing. 52% of tech CFOs have no pre-negotiated severance.
- Growth-stage CFOs trade base for upside. CFOs at $25M to $50M tech companies reported a lower median base than the tier below them, which the survey authors attribute to equity-heavy offers.
If you're taking or offering a below-market base for equity, put the vesting schedule, refresh grants, and acceleration terms in writing. Equity without those protections can be diluted or forfeited on a change of control, and the salary you gave up doesn't come back.
Fractional CFO Cost vs Full-Time CFO Salary
Fractional CFOs average $177 an hour, with the middle half of the market between $125 and $210, according to live rate data from a fractional talent marketplace updated in October 2026.
At a typical 14 hours a week, the marketplace prices that at $7,000 to $11,700 a month using a four-week month. Billed across all 52 weeks, the average rate comes to about $128,900 a year. Venture-focused accounting firms quote higher rates, typically $250 to $350 an hour.
The clearest way to decide is to look at CFO cost as a share of revenue:
| Company revenue | Full-time CFO median total cash | Full-time cost as % of revenue | Fractional cost per year | Fractional cost as % of revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10M | $355,000 | 3.6% | $128,900 | 1.3% |
| $25M | $355,000 | 1.4% | $128,900 | 0.5% |
| $75M | $380,000 | 0.5% | $128,900 | 0.2% |
| $175M | $450,000 | 0.3% | Rarely enough coverage | n/a |
| $750M | $700,000 | 0.1% | Rarely enough coverage | n/a |
Full-time figures use the median total cash for each revenue tier from survey A; the $10M and $25M rows both use the under-$50M tier. Fractional cost assumes 14 hours a week billed for 52 weeks at $177 an hour. Percentages are our calculations. Full-time costs exclude benefits, payroll taxes, equity, and recruiting fees, so the real gap is wider.
A fractional CFO usually fits when:
- Revenue is under about $25M, and the finance team already has a strong controller.
- The company needs board-ready reporting, a budget, and cash forecasting, but not a full-time strategic partner.
- You need cover during a search or a leave of absence.
A full-time CFO is usually due when any of these happen:
- The company is raising institutional capital or preparing for an audit.
- A PE sponsor takes ownership, since sponsors expect a dedicated CFO to run the value creation plan and the financial due diligence at exit.
- Revenue passes roughly $50M, where a full-time CFO costs well under 1% of revenue.
- Lenders or investors require a named CFO.
Our interim and fractional executive search team places both models.
How Industry, Location, and Experience Affect CFO Salary
Revenue explains most of the variation in CFO pay, but industry, geography, and experience can each move total cash by $100,000 or more at the same company size. The figures below come from survey A and show median total cash.
CFO Salary by Industry
Financial services CFOs earn the most, with median total cash of $750,000. Other sectors cluster far lower:
- Healthcare and life sciences: $500,000
- Technology: $475,000
- Industrial: $470,000
- Consumer: $465,000
The financial services premium is mostly bonus: its median target bonus is 60% of base, compared with 50% overall. If you're hiring a CFO with regulated balance-sheet experience, expect to pay into this range even at a smaller company.
CFO Salary by Location
Geographic location moves CFO pay by up to $180,000. Northeast-based CFOs earn median total cash of $600,000, compared with $420,000 in the Midwest. Other regions:
- West Coast: $530,000
- Mid-Atlantic: $520,000
- Mountain West: $505,000
- Southeast: $500,000
- Southwest: $475,000
With hybrid work now the norm for senior finance roles, decide upfront whether you're paying for the company's headquarters market or the candidate's home market, and write that into the offer.
CFO Pay by Experience and Job Moves
Years in the CFO seat matter less than most people assume. CFOs with fewer than five years of CFO experience earn median total cash of $460,000, while those with more than 15 years earn $510,000, a gap of only about 11%. Survey C found base salary peaks at six to ten years of experience, while bonus keeps rising after that.
Changing companies pays more reliably than tenure. CFOs who move into a new role report an average 10% increase in cash compensation, whether they're experienced PE-backed CFOs or first-timers. Build that premium into the budget for any external hire.
CFO vs Controller vs VP of Finance Salary
Corporate controllers earn $154,500 to $216,250, according to a national staffing firm's 2027 salary guide, well below the CFO range in the first table of this guide. VP of Finance roles sit between the two, with a median base of $230,000 in the tech survey.
| Role | Typical base salary | Bonus | Equity | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corporate controller | $154,500 low, $187,500 mid, $216,250 high | Not reported | Not reported | Accounting, close, financial reporting, internal controls |
| VP of Finance | $230,000 median ($190,000 to $275,000) | Target near 15% of base; median payout 50% of target | Median $200,000 a year | FP&A, budgeting, some investor reporting |
| CFO | See the benchmark tables above | 35% to 80% of base by tier | Median $1.0M a year in tech | Capital strategy, board, lenders, investors, M&A |
VP of Finance figures come from the 2026 tech finance compensation survey.
The base gap between a VP of Finance and a CFO is about 20%. The equity gap is five times. If you're promoting a VP into the CFO seat, the equity grant is where the promotion actually happens.
A deliberate leadership pipeline from VP to CFO is usually cheaper than an external search, since repeat CFOs command a premium.
How to Benchmark a CFO Salary Offer in 2026
Benchmark a CFO compensation package by matching it to companies with the same ownership, revenue tier, and industry, then checking each pay element separately. Total compensation hides problems that a line-by-line check catches.
- Match the comparison set. Use PE-backed data for a sponsor-owned company, proxy comparables for a public one, and venture data for a startup. Mixing them is the most common reason offers miss.
- Place base within the tier's band. In survey A, the middle half of CFO base salaries runs from $250,000 to $358,000 under $50M, $300,000 to $360,000 at $50M to $100M, $310,000 to $400,000 at $100M to $250M, $300,000 to $420,000 at $250M to $500M, $400,000 to $500,000 at $500M to $1B, and $435,000 to $615,000 above $1B.
The benchmark table's percentile column shows total cash, so use these base bands here. A base under the 25th percentile needs a clear reason, such as an outsized equity grant. Underpricing rarely saves money: a failed C-suite hire usually costs several times the executive's annual pay.
- Check the target bonus against the pay-mix table. A $300M company offering a 30% target is below the market's 50% median.
- Price equity in both percentage and dollars. Ask what the grant is worth at award and at a base-case exit. A percentage alone can't be compared across companies.
- Check severance and acceleration terms. More than 80% of PE-backed CFOs have a severance policy, but 58% get no equity acceleration if they're terminated without cause.
- Add the move premium for an external hire. Budget for the job-move premium covered in the experience section above.
- Cross-check with a second source. If two independent benchmarks disagree by more than 15%, find out why before you send the offer. A specialist search partner, like those in our list of top CFO executive search firms, can supply live comparables.
You can use this checklist when you review the package:
| Offer element | What to compare against | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | Tier median and base-salary 25th to 75th percentile band (step 2) | Below the 25th percentile with no equity offset |
| Target bonus | Tier median target from the pay-mix table | Target with no defined metrics or payout curve |
| Equity | Tier median percentage and dollar value at award | No vesting, refresh, or change-of-control terms in writing |
| Severance | Market norm for the ownership type | None for a PE-backed or public role |
| Sign-on bonus | Size of forfeited equity or bonus | Used to paper over a below-market base |

CFO Compensation Trends for 2026
CFO cash compensation rose modestly heading into 2026, though surveys disagree on whether base or bonus drove the gain. Average total cash for PE-backed CFOs in survey A rose 5% from 2024 to 2025, driven by a 7% increase in base, while average bonuses fell 2%.
Other surveys show mixed bonus trends:
- PE-backed CFOs in survey B saw actual pay slip 4%, as bonuses paid fell 11% while targets held.
- The F Suite's 2026 data shows base up 1.8% and total cash up 7%, with median bonus attainment rising to 90% of target from 78% the year before.
The talent market is also turning over fast. CFO turnover at Fortune 500 and S&P 500 companies is projected to reach 18.3% in 2026, above the 10-year average of 16%, and the average newly appointed CFO is 48, down from 52 in 2025. First-time CFOs made up 64% of new appointments in the first half of 2026.
What this means for 2026 offers:
- Expect base-heavy negotiations. PE-backed candidates whose bonuses paid out below plan last year are pushing for more guaranteed base.
- Budget for first-time CFOs. With more seats going to first-timers, plan for coaching and a strong controller alongside the salary budget.
- Publish realistic ranges. In states with pay transparency laws, the posted CFO range becomes the anchor for every candidate conversation.

FAQs
Does a CFO's bonus target change after a private equity firm buys the company?
Usually, yes. In The F Suite's 2026 data, PE-backed CFOs had a median target bonus of 40% of base, compared with 30% across all respondents. Expect the metrics to shift too: CFOs in survey C named EBITDA growth as the top value driver, and sponsors usually add a one-time equity grant that pays out at exit.
Should a CFO at a $250M-$500M company take a lower base for more equity?
Only if the equity terms are strong. This tier has the smallest median equity percentage of any tier in the pay-mix table, and most PE-backed CFOs get no equity acceleration if they're terminated without cause (see step 5 of the benchmark checklist). A base cut makes sense when the grant is at or above the tier median and includes acceleration on a change of control.
How do you compare a public-company RSU grant with PE-backed equity at exit?
Annualize the PE grant. Divide its expected value at a base-case exit by the expected years to exit, then compare that figure with the public company's yearly stock award. About two in five PE-backed CFOs expect their sponsor to exit within two years, which makes the annualized value high; a longer hold shrinks it quickly.
